I had back surgery in 2018, and since then, you might say I’ve been “scared of chairs”. So, I think about chairs a lot. I started thinking about how chairs facilitate human connection, but also, how a single chair can represent an island of calm.

I wanted the chairs to be inviting, a place to pause, a welcoming seat in an otherwise frantic world; so I painted them a soft buttery yellow and added little blurbs like, “Deep Breath” and “Take a Load Off”. The Respite Project became a visual welcome mat in a time of pandemic isolation.
